Our subtitle this week is “The Spirit of Christ is Best.” This week Jesus takes aim at a self-righteous, judgmental spirit. I think that we can say, at some point, most all of us have had this problem. Why would I say that? We have always done things, or had things, a certain way, and those who do not do them that way are at least missing the highest mark and might be just plain wrong. When we draw up a standard and demand that it be the standard for religion and morality and our standard is not in the Bible we are playing the Pharisee. In other words, we are making our preferences synonymous with God’s word. When we do this we distort who God is and what His Word says. We set people up for big heart aches as they follow God but fail to obey our standards.
